Why do I need a crown instead of a filling?

Fillings and crowns are both dental restorations, but they each have very different purposes. At Warm Springs Dental, we recommend treatment designed to protect and, ultimately, save your tooth.

A dental filling seals your tooth after removing decay. Removing decay leaves a cavity and exposes the internal part of your tooth to collect food particles and bacteria. We prevent this by filling your cavity with tooth-colored composite. Composite is a mixture of BPA-free plastic and microscopic glass particles. We match composite to the color of your tooth so that it complements your smile.

A dental crown protects a tooth when its structure has sustained enough damage to put it at risk. Chewing food each day places a strain on your teeth. Without proper support, your tooth may split or break, resulting in the need for an extraction.

A dental crown completely covers your tooth and absorbs some of the force of chewing.

As we do with our dental fillings, we create natural-looking crowns. Our crowns are metal-free, and we match them to the color of your smile. Our dentists expertly design each crown for a comfortable fit and proper function. In some cases, we can create same-day crowns using CEREC technology.
